Essie Irene Tyler

Essie Irene Winstead Tyler of McEwen died Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at her home after a years-long battle with cancer. She was 78. Mrs. Tyler was born February 23, 1942, in Nashville to Luther Hershel and Essie Ridings Winstead. She graduated from McEwen High School in 1960 and married Jimmy Tyler in December of the following year. The couple settled in McEwen for the next 58 years. She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband and their four children: Mike Tyler (Debbie) of Waverly, TN; Jeff Tyler (Brenda) of Brentwood, TN; Becky Dotson (Mark) of Mt. Juliet, TN; and Tim Tyler (Karrie) of McEwen. She’s also survived by her eight grandchildren who were the light of her life – Amber and Adam Tyler, Caleb (Amelia) and Ryan Tyler, Tyler Dotson and Luke (Emily), Sarah and James Tyler. She is survived by one sister, Mary Sue Tankersley of Waverly, TN and a great number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Tyler was known for her infectious laugh, selfless attitude, listening ear and servant’s heart. She showed her deep and abiding love for her family and others in words and deeds. She was a courageous fighter who found joy in suffering and a wonderful Christian woman who lived a peaceful and quiet life. She not only believed in the Golden Rule, she lived it. She loved Jesus and Kentucky basketball. She loved her family and coconut cake. She loved to read her Bible and work crossword puzzles. She enjoyed traveling but loved being at home more. She loved to cook and bake and visit with and talk about her grandchildren. Mrs. Tyler was preceded in death by her parents, nine brothers and sisters and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Tyler are as follows: Visitation will be held Friday, September 11, 2020 from 1 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Luff-Bowen Funeral Home, 9729 Highway 70 East, in McEwen, Tennessee. Saturday’s visitation will also be held at Luff-Bowen from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, September 12, 2020 at McEwen Church of Christ, 9704 Highway 70 East, with burial immediately following at the Meadowlawn Cemetery in McEwen, Tennessee. Bro. Jim Suddeath, Bro. Sam Long, and Bro. Hoby Grace will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to: Sarah Cannon Fund, 1100 Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Blvd., Suite 800, Nashville, TN 37203. You may also leave your donations at Luff-Bowen Funeral Home in McEwen and we will forward them for you. McEwen High School class of 1960 will be honorary pallbearers. The family is asking all who attend any part of the visitation or service to wear a mask.
