On November 23rd Barbara H. Winstead received an angel escort to heaven to be with her Heavenly Father. Barbara leaves behind great memories, accomplishments, loving family and friends. Barbara was a kind, loving, devoted wife, mother, neighbor and friend who put family and friends first above herself, as she was steadfastly grounded in her faith. Barbara was born in Harvey, Illinois February 18, 1931 to the late Johnie James and Helen Clawson Hooper of McEwen. Barbara was the only daughter of Johnie and Helen and though she was born in Illinois, she lived most of her life in McEwen. Barbara was a volunteer at the McEwen School, and a Sunday school teacher at the McEwen United Methodist Church for many years. She was an accomplished, self-taught organist who went on to fulfill one of her most treasured responsibilities as the organist for the church she loved so much. Barbara’s most important and cherished job in life was being a mother of four. There was nothing more important in her life than her children and her husband. She was an avid cook throughout her life as only a member of the greatest generation could be, and always produced the most outstanding Thanksgiving meal imaginable for the family. Recently, Barbara became active with the local Animal Shelter producing and delivering over one thousand, custom, hand sewn bandanas, as gifts for animals preparing for adoption.
