Mr. Henry Joe Stamps, Sr., age 93, of Waverly, TN, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015, at the Medical Center Bowling Green, in Bowling Green, KY. Mr. Stamps was born November 4, 1921, in Baxter, TN, to Thomas Franklin and Vina Lou Bohannon Stamps. He was married to Rose Marie Maxwell Stamps. He was a three year veteran of the United States Army Air Force, having proudly served his country at the Battle of The Bulge in Belgium, during World War II. Among the five medals he was awarded, he was most proud of the Air Medal with Five Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a member of the Hickman-Patterson Post #34 American Legion in Waverly. Mr. Stamps taught Vocational Agriculture and was a Future Farmers of America Advisor for 18 years at Waverly Central High School. He was the only Educator for the Humphreys County School System to have served as Principal for each of the schools in Waverly; Waverly Elementary School, Waverly Jr. High School, and Waverly Central High School. He was very active in community and civic activities. He was Past President of Waverly Exchange Club, serving two terms, Secretary of the Humphreys Co. Fair for 15 years. Past President of the Humphreys County Education Assoc., serving two terms, represented Humphreys County Education and Teachers at the National Education Convention in Detroit, MI, Past Member of National Elementary Principal Assoc., Past Member of National High School Principal Assoc., was a Life Member of Parent-Teacher Assoc., and a member of the Waverly Masonic Lodge #304. Mr. Stamps was a farmer, and an avid bird dog trainer for over 50 years. He was skilled in landscaping, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry jobs. He enjoyed quail hunting and fishing, knowing all of the good fishing spots on Kentucky Lake. Survivors include 3 children: Rebecca Burns (Jerry), Bowling Green, KY, Elaine Vandiver (Bill), Kingston, TN, and Joe Stamps (Diep), Matthews, NC, 1 sister: Margaret Rose Greer, Nashville, TN, 6 grandchildren: Kimberly Fulton (Alex), Julie Keith (Brent), Brian Vandiver (Rebecca), Charlie Stamps, Samuel Stamps, and Toby Stamps, 3 great grandchildren: Henry Hawkins Keith, Raquel Rosalind Vandiver, and Louis Addison Vandiver. He was preceded in death by his wife; Rose Marie Maxwell Stamps, parents, and 9 siblings. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, October 14, 2015, from 4-7 p.m., at the Luff-Bowen Funeral Home in Waverly, TN. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 15, 2015, at the Waverly Church of Christ, 438 West Main Street, Waverly, TN. Bro. Jeff Keele will be officiating the service. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Maxwell Cemetery in Baxter, TN with military honors.
