LaVerne Smith Turner

Mrs. LaVerne Smith Turner, age 87, of Waverly, TN, passed away December 29, 2014, in Waverly. Mrs. Turner was born in Westport, TN, September 16, 1927, to Charlie J. and Gillie Ann Joyner Smith. She was married to Gordon Ishmael Turner, who preceded her in death. She attended Elementary School in Buena Vista, 1-8 grades; High School in Bruceton, Hollow Rock Central High School where she was a Beta Club member, and Class Artist (all 4 years); College, Murray State University, Murray, KY, BS Degree, member of the Art Club 4 years, Voted - "Outstanding Art Student" of her class at graduation; and Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, MA Degree, Art Major, chosen to have her art work pictured in the Nashville Banner upon graduation. She was teaching art at Waverly Central High School and raising two sons, Danny and Gregory, at this time, and her husband Gordon, a World Ware II Veteran, made all the college work possible by his encouragement and financial support. Mrs. Turner was a member of the Humphreys County Retired Teachers Assoc., Humphreys County Arts Council, Waverly First United Methodist Church, and the Hart Sunday School Class. Visitation with the family was held Tuesday, December 30, 2014, from 5-9 p.m., and Wednesday, December 31, 2014, from 9 a.m. until funeral service time at 10 a.m., at the Luff-Bowen Funeral Home in Waverly. Rev. Thad Collier officiated the service. Interment followed in the Richlawn Cemetery in Waverly, TN. Survivors include: 2 Sons: Danny L.
