Mrs. Stella Mae Smith Black, age 103, of Nashville, TN, passed away Friday, August 9, 2013, at Belcourt Terrace Nursing Home in Nashville. She was born June 10, 1910, in Denver, TN, to Howard Bennette and Ida Louella Lomax Smith. She was one of nine children. She was educated in the schools of Denver, TN in Humphreys County. She was a gifted seamstress, a skill passed to her and her sister from their mother. Her excellent sewing skills allowed her to open "The Little Sewing Shop" on Jefferson Street, an African American Business District in Nashville, where she worked until she retired. She was married to McKinley Black, the love of her life, and he adored her and she him. Her legacy is that she kept on living and giving and she always had a great sense of humor, even if she was telling you off. Aunt Stella was so very special to her loving family. Visitation with the family will be Sunday, August 11, 2013, from 3 p.m. until funeral service time at 4 p.m., at the Salters Chapel A.M.E. Church in Waverly, TN. Rev. Edward Lee Thompson will be officiating the service. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Waverly, TN. Active pallbearers will be Robert Turner, Jr., Steve Turner, Michael Hogan, Stephen Turner, Patrick Turner, Reginald Pendergrass, and Van Turner. Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Goodrich, William Wells, and Larry Walker.
