Enid Haney Barber died March 5, 2013. She was born on June 14, 1923 in Swifton, Arkansas. After graduation from Swifton High School, she entered nursing school in Memphis, where she met Orvel Barber. They were married in Corinth, Mississippi on November 12, 1942. After Orvel got out of the army, they moved around following welding jobs in various places. In 1950, they settled in New Johnsonville where Orvel became a steamfitter foreman at TVA. It was in Humphreys County that Enid and Orvel reared their four children. After they built a house near Hustburg, Enid commuted part-time for years to earn her B.S. at Bethel College and M.S. and EdD at Austin Peay. She served Humphreys County children for 44 years as a teacher, guidance counselor, principal, supervisor of education, and as director of schools. She served on the committee that worked to build Humphreys County Center for Higher Education, which is now a branch of Nashville State Community college. After she retired, she worked diligently to help raise money for the scholarship fund at HCCHE. She also wrote her autobiography, Cotton Fields, and donated all the proceeds from the sale of the book to the 21st Century Educational Scholarship Fund at HCCHE. Enid accomplished a lot in her 89 years, but her proudest accomplishment was her family. She balanced her insatiable drive to excel with an unflagging and ever cheerful need to care for others. She had been a member of the New Johnsonville Church of christ since its earliest days. Her witness for Christ was her life. She is survived by her children: Carole Barber of Franklin, TN; Dr. Nancy Barber of Waverly, TN, Bob Barber of New Johnsonville, TN; and Linda (John Bingham) Barber of Kingsport, TN, by her grandchildren: Dr. John (Melanie) Chambers, Jr. of Franklin, TN, Sarah (John) Dillard of Franklin, TN, Daniel (Amelia) Chambers of Birmingham, AL, Matthew Bingham of Kingsport, TN, and Laura Bingham of Dallas, TX; by great grandchildren: Hannah, Sam and Josh Chambers of Franklin, Andrew and Emily Dillard of Franklin, and Carlo, Vincent and Leanora Chambers of Birmingham, AL; by her brother, James Dee Haney, LTC US Army retired and wife Christine of Perryville, Maryland and by many nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orvel Barber; her parents, James and Anna Haney; her brothers, Paul and Earl Haney. The Funeral service will be held at Luff-Bowen Funeral Home on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at 1:00 P.M. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 3:30-6:00 P.M., and preceding the funeral beginning at 11:00 A.M. Bro. Joe Rhodes will be officiating. After the service, interment will be at Ebenezer Cemetery in Hustburg. Active pallbearers will be Bill Barber, David Barber, Daniel Chambers, Dr. John Chambers, Jr., Eric Haney, and Mike Haney.
